EMWD Celebrates America Recycles Day With Recycled Water Commitments

Press Release

Perris, CA (November 15, 2022) — Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) is celebrating America Recycles Day by proudly doing its part as an industry leader in recycled water.

As California and the West continue to face historic water supply challenges, there has never been a more important time for water agencies to beneficially use 100 percent of their recycled water supplies. EMWD has done so for many years, as recycled water accounts for more than one-third of the water used in EMWD’s service area.

Every day, EMWD treats nearly 46 million gallons of wastewater at its four regional water reclamation facilities. That water is treated to tertiary standards, which are safe for body contact and food crops.

EMWD’s recycled water is used on more than 10,000 acres of agriculture, and for irrigation of 76 parks, 27 schools, seven golf courses, public landscaping, and wildlife areas. EMWD is one of the few agencies in California using 100 percent of its recycled water supply and is one of the largest by-volume recyclers in the state.

By using its recycled water supplies throughout the community, EMWD is able to reduce its demands on imported drinking water sources and ensure it is being environmentally responsible.

EMWD is also advancing a Purified Water Replenishment program, where recycled water will go through advanced treatment and blending, and then be used to safely replenish our aquifers. That water will improve the quality and quantity of our groundwater basins and one day be used for clean and safe drinking water purposes.

“We are proud to be a leader in recycled water efforts and a model for how important water recycling is for our environment,” EMWD Board President Phil Paule said. “As we celebrate America Recycles Day, EMWD pledges to keep using every drop twice.”
