Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) is celebrating National Safety Month by reaffirming its commitment to being an industry leader in workplace safety for the benefit of its employees and the community.

National Safety Month was developed by the National Safety Council, a non-profit safety advocacy organization that works to promote workplace safety.

EMWD has long been an industry leader in occupational safety. It is a member of the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Plan STAR program, which recognizes public and private organizations that go beyond Cal/OSHA standards for workplace safety and successfully implement best practices designed to protect the health and safety of employees, contractors and the public.

EMWD first earned STAR status in 1999 and has held it continuously since. It was recertified in 2020 as part of a triennial process and received three separate certifications for its water, wastewater, and recycled water divisions.

EMWD remains the only water agency in California to hold STAR status.

As part of its longstanding commitment to workplace safety, EMWD employees are required to undergo extensive and ongoing training related to their job duties. EMWD actively promotes accountability and has a safety record that far exceeds the industry averages.

“While EMWD is proud to celebrate National Safety Month, we also know that workplace safety is a 365-day a year responsibility that we are proud to uphold,” EMWD Board President Phil Paule said. “Safety is the priority in everything we do at EMWD, and we are proud of the culture we have created to ensure that our employees, contractors, and members of the public remain safe.”

Eastern Municipal Water District is the water, wastewater service and recycled water provider to nearly one million people living and working within a 558-square mile service area in western Riverside County. It is California’s sixth-largest retail water agency, and its mission is “To deliver value to our diverse customers and the communities we serve by providing safe, reliable, economical and environmentally sustainable water, wastewater and recycled water services.” More information can be found at www.emwd.org
