Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) is celebrating World Water Day today by highlighting its investments in groundwater that will help provide for our region’s future.

World Water Day was established in 1993 and is observed annually by the United Nations to raise awareness of the 2 billion people globally without access to safe water.

EMWD is proud of its efforts to provide safe and reliable water service to the nearly 1 million customers who live within its service area. That reliability includes the expanded use of groundwater, which is a focus of the 2022 World Water Day.

EMWD’s Groundwater Reliability Plus program is a holistic approach toward responsibly expanding our groundwater infrastructure, protecting groundwater quality, and replenishing our local basins to provide long-term sustainability of our groundwater basins.

Among the groundwater efforts that EMWD is currently advancing:

  • EMWD’s third groundwater desalination facility, which removes salts from an otherwise unusable water supply, will open later this year in Menifee.
  • In Moreno Valley, EMWD’s Perris North Groundwater Program is constructing six wells, pipelines, and a treatment facility to help provide long-term improvements to groundwater quality in the region.
  • In San Jacinto, EMWD is advancing a Purified Water Replenishment Program that will advance treat recycled water to be used for groundwater replenishment, where it will eventually become a clean, safe, and sustainable drinking water supply.

“On World Water Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate our access to clean, safe and reliable water supplies,” EMWD Board President Phil Paule said. “EMWD is proud to do its part to highlight the importance of groundwater to not just our community, but to our global water supply cycle.”

Eastern Municipal Water District is the water, wastewater service and recycled water provider to nearly one million people living and working within a 558-square mile service area in western Riverside County. It is California’s sixth-largest retail water agency, and its mission is “To deliver value to our diverse customers and the communities we serve by providing safe, reliable, economical and environmentally sustainable water, wastewater and recycled water services.”
