Write-Off Contest

Each year, EMWD hosts a Write-Off contest for students in grades 6-8. This contest requires teacher facilitation and is aligned with the Common Core Standards.

The winning student(s) will have their story published.

Contest Guidelines

This is a class-based project for students in grades 6-8, requires teacher facilitation, and is aligned with the Common Core Standards. Students may work alone or in groups of no more than two.

Students are encouraged to explore their creativity to author and illustrate an engaging story for elementary school students in grades 3-5.

Students will research and present an engaging story that includes details identified by EMWD about the chosen theme.

All participating classrooms submitting complete stories will be entered into a drawing for a pizza party. Classes submitting incomplete stories will be ineligible for pizza party.

Story requirements:

  • 500-1,000 words
  • Written for grade levels 3-5
  • Illustrated (students are encouraged to work in teams)
  • Must include student biography, teacher biography, and student dedication.

Artwork and story text must be SEPARATE and submitted on 8.5” x 11” paper, for book design and publishing purposes.

No trademarked or copyrighted artwork or materials will be accepted.

The published story will be provided to elementary schools and libraries, and made available as an eBook at www.emwd.org/eBooks.

Story and illustrations become the property of EMWD.

Incomplete stories will be disqualified.
