Perris, CA (October 10, 2024) — Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) was recognized this week with the Utility of the Future, Today award for its innovative and sustainable approach to energy management.

This is the fourth consecutive year EMWD has received the honor from the Water Environment Federation.

EMWD has made significant investments in clean energy programs, including the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and battery storage facilities that will result in long-term cost savings and support a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

This year, EMWD completed the installation of 95 electric vehicle charging stations at its Perris headquarters, with many in publicly accessible parking areas. These charging stations will support the agency’s expanded clean energy fleet. In fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25, forty-nine percent of EMWD’s fleet vehicle replacements will be alternative fuel and zero emission units. By the end of 2024, it will have nearly 20 fully electric light-duty trucks.

EMWD recently installed Tesla battery storage units at five major facilities, each capable of storing 2 MWh of energy to be purchased during low-rate periods and used during peak rates or power outages. The battery units will result in $2.73 million in cost savings over the next 15 years.

“We wish to thank the Water Environment Federation for recognizing our vision of a sustainable future,” EMWD Board President Phil Paule said. “Our agency is proud to be at the forefront of reducing its environmental footprint through alternative and clean energy programs that also result in cost savings to our customers.”
